"Nuncrackers" sing-along!

Here's a song from the current production of "Nuncrackers" at the Vam York. How many Christmas carols can you spot in the lyrics?

We wish you peace on earth, good will and cheer
And all good things in the coming year
May each day be merry and bright
And filled with blessings every night

The first noel was a silent night
As the shepherds watched their flock
While away in a manger a babe was born
In a wooden stable box
“What child is this?” the wise men asked
On this O holy night
T’was Jesus, savior of the world
Born to set things right
Hark the herald angels sing
Of a rose from Jesse’s stem
For unto us a child is born
In the little town of Bethlehem
Go tell it on a mountain now
Three ships come sailing in
O tannenbaum, O tannenbaum /
Glad tidings to you and your kin
I’ll be home for Christmas soon
In a winter wonderland
Sleigh bells ring and carolers sing
In the Salvation Army band
Joy to the world
The Lord has come for all
A white Christmas is guaranteed
As snowflakes start to fall
All the children are tucked into bed
Waiting for Santa Claus
While up on the roof top
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Santa pause
Frosty the snowman is looking swell
Cause it’s 18 Fahrenheit
Merry Christmas is all there’s left to say
As we sing together tonight

Leave me a comment with how many you can spot!!! The show starts back up tonight and runs through Sunday. Don't miss it!

"Nuncrackers" cast profile: Lola Hassan-Adams

"Nuncrackers" opens tomorrow night at the Vam York Theater to spread some holiday cheer! First up on Santa's list (naughty or nice? you decide!) is Lola Hassan-Adams, who plays Sister Robert Anne!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
LH: I've been doing shows at GCP since 2000 and have been everything from Random Chorus Member #5, a tree, Rizz, a queen on a power trip, and a man!

GCP Girl: Tell me about your character in "Nuncrackers."
LH: I play Sister Robert Anne from Brooklyn, New York. The street-smart, wisecracking troublemaker, NOTHING like myself at all! She is a bit rough around the edges, but has a heart of gold.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite scene in the show?
LH: MY favorite scene is Sister Julia. However, Robert Anne's favorite scene without a doubt is when she gets to have the stage during "All I want for Christmas." Performing is her lifelong dream, you realize.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite holiday tradition and why?
LH: Reading "The Night Before Christmas" to my little sister Megan. I do it every year.

GCP Girl: How is this show different from others you've done?
LH: Time and space. Doing a Christmas show, you have a longer rehearsal time, less time in the theater, and less time for an actual performance. After doing "Peter Pan" for five weeks, this two-week run should be interesting!

GCP Girl: What do you want everyone to know about "Nuncrackers"?
LH: It's a fun, warmhearted, cheesy Christmas show. Perfect for this time of year and fun for all ages.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
LH: It means SO much! To those of us in the show and people who come and see our shows. It's about new experiences, family, and local arts. It's a wonderful place to be and be a part of.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
LH: I am a notary AND an Ordained Minister!

So what do you think – does Lola get a gift or a lump of coal? ;-) I know what I want for the holidays...I want you to see "Nuncrackers"! Hurry and get your tickets at Book Gallery West. The show only runs for two weeks!

"Singin' in the Rain" cast profile: Sarah Emmets

Sarah Emmets talks about her first GCP experience in "Singin' in the Rain"!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
SE: I was previously in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" as Lucy my sophomore year of high school, which was my first play. Then I was in a very impr show called "Alice's Magical Musical Tour" as Alice that my voice teacher created, on which I had to learn the main part in one night (good thing I love theatre). Then,  I was in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" again when the music director decided to do it for my senior year as a senior play, where I played Lucy again. And now I am blessed to be a part of the fabulous production "Singin' in the Rain."

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
SE: That is a tough question. It is between "Wicked," "Rent" or "Legally Blonde: The Musical."

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, dancing or acting?
SE: I feel that I am a better actor then a singer or a dancer. Although I have taken years of singing lessons and know how to carry a tune, and I can pick up dance moves very quickly and I think I have some rhythm.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
SE: My favorite part of "Singin' in the Rain" is being able to meet such amazing people. This is my first year in Gainesville and I couldn't ask for more awesome people to make me feel welcome. Although I do enjoy the hilarious comedy and the awesome dance and singing numbers, the bonding and having a good time together has to be my favorite. Oh, I would also add that I also love THE BOOK. :)

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
SE: Another tough question. By far, my favorite number to perform and watch is "Broadway Melody"; that song is just so much fun to do. I would have to say that my favorite song to listen to is "You Stepped Out of a Dream." That song is so adorable and sweet and is performed very well.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
SE: Oh boy, my absolute dream role would to be play Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde: The Musical." Although I would love to play Elphaba or Glinda in "Wicked." Or Velma or Roxie in "Chicago." Or I would love to be Mimi in "Rent."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
SE: What inspires me is all the awesome musicals that are out there. Watching and listening to all those brilliant actors portray interesting charters makes me want to jump into a production.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
SE: Community theatre to me means that everyone who has jobs or goes to school can still come together in their spare time to do what they love. No matter if they are a lawyer or a doctor, they can still perform for their love of the stage.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
SE: I would like everyone to know that I absolutely love the theatre and would like to hopefully pursue a career in it. I would also like everyone to know that "Singin' in the Rain" is an amazing show, put on by fabulous, hardworking people.
Thanks, Sarah!  Time is running out to see this show, so get your tickets now!

"Singin' in the Rain" cast profile: Stephanie Kelly

Stephanie Kelly plays Kathy Selden, the lovely leading lady of "Singin' in the Rain"...

GCP Girl
: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
SK: Stop yelling at me.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
SK: In high school I was in "The Pirates of Penzance." I played your typical stuffy English aristocrat, Edith. It was one of my finer theatrical moments. One of the finer theatrical moments, period. I played the role with dignity, poise, and a subtle demureness that could only be described as ethereal. The cast voted me “best stripper.”

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, dancing or acting?
SK: I’m not falling into your trap, GCP Girl… Sure. I know how this goes. I pick one option, and suddenly it’s…. “Well, well, well, Stephanie here thinks she’s an EXPERT at ing. Can you BELIEVE the audacity? The NERVE! Who does she think she is? Neil Patrick Harris? I’ve SEEN Doogie Howser, and you can bet your sweet bippy, she’s no NPH…. She wishes.” I’ll plead the fifth on this one, thanks.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
SK: Figuring out exactly HOW it is that GCP girl manages to “anonymously” interview cast and crew members. I just assumed she used a mask and an auto-tune. Maybe a trench coat…Not so. I can tell you, the answer is much more technological.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
SK: "Singin’ in the Rain" has so many iconic songs, it’s hard to pick a favorite! I like “Interlude 3” though. It sounds like the flight of a bumblebee.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
SK: Lucy in "Jekyll and Hyde," or maybe Aldonza in "Man of La Mancha." Essentially, a hooker with a heart of gold… I would also consider playing Bea Arthur in a biopic. If the price is right.

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
SK: Caffeine usually.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
SK: Warm and fuzzies galore. It’s a feeling that is somewhere between a hug from your favorite Disney character and a free combo meal upgrade.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
SK: I need a job. A real one, preferably. Money, hours, the works. GRRRRRRRR…. Sorry, that was my stomach.

Sounds like Steph needs to visit Sarah or Norma and volunteer for taste-testing! And here's something scary...as I'm writing this, "Singin' in the Rain" just popped up on my iTunes shuffle!!

Sarah Nesselroade brings her acting talent to the role of Lina Lamont, the movie star with a voice that could shatter glass, in "Singin' in the Rain"!

GCP Girl:
Tell me about some of your previous shows.
SN: At GCP, I have also done “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I also recently was in “Closer” at the Acrosstown. I did about a gazillion shows in college.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
SN: So far, "Closer" was my favorite show I have done. I found my character extremely challenging and deep, but I’m loving the character of Lina as well. They are completely opposite roles, which I like. I love versatility!

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, dancing or acting?
SN: ACTING.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
SN: Getting to know everyone in the cast, and I LOVE my role!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
SN: Well, I’m only in the finale……but I love watching "Broadway Melody," because everyone in the show (aside from me) is on stage together!

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
SN: Hmmmm……..Stage---Glinda in “Wicked.” Or Catherine in “Proof.”

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
SN: Stories!! Fiction and nonfiction. I love stories because they are heartbreaking or funny or inspirational, or whatever. Stories can reach everyone and they are a way for people to connect to each other, and they encourage the use of our imaginations! I LOVE acting because we get the chance to tell and experience them!

">GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
SN: I think Community theatre is wonderful, because you have a mix of people who are doing it as a hobby and people who want to pursue it as a career, but all are extremely passionate. And we work SO hard and are not getting paid. That shows that we are all involved because we LOVE it and for no other reason. And the people are great. You get to know intelligent, creative, imaginative people from all walks of life and they become your greatest friends.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
SN: Oh geez! Mmmmmm……I want to go to culinary school but only to learn how to cook better at home. I love food and wine and entertaining, so I want to attend culinary school just so I can throw exquisite parties and cook exceptional meals!!!

Hmmm...sounds like Sarah and Norma need to get together and make dinner for the cast! Curtain goes up at 8 p.m. tonight!

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
NB: This one, so far!

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, dancing or acting?
NB: I'm the worst dancer in this cast, but I'm not that bad. I would say singing is my strongest skill.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
NB: Watching Sarah as Lina. She is hysterically funny.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
NB: "You Stepped Out of a Dream," because of the challenging choral role.

NB: Eponine in "Les Miserables."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?

"Singin' in the Rain" cast profile: Amanda Dearolph

Amanda Dearolph lends her vocal talents to "Singin' in the Rain" as mysterious silent film star Olga Maria!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
AD: This is my second show at GCP - I played Blanche Ingram in "Jane Eyre" last year. I've also been in "Once Upon A Mattress," "Anything Goes," and "The Music Man."

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
AD: "Jane Eyre." GCP is so much better than high school theatre.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, dancing or acting?
AD: Definitely singing. I'm classically trained, and I've been singing for as long as I can remember.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
AD: "The Book" ;).

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
AD: That's tough, but probably the finale. I'm in the front row, and I can see the audience and their faces light up when we all come out in our big yellow rain coats and red umbrellas. It's amazing.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
AD: Wow, I'm not sure I could choose just one. We actually had a conversation about this in the dressing room one night. There are a lot, but the main roles I would love to play are Clara from "The Light in the Piazza," Christine or Carlotta from "The Phantom of the Opera," Dot from "Sunday in the Park with George" and Janet Van der Graff from "The Drowsy Chaperone."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
AD: A lot of things, depending on what I'm inspired to do. Art inspires me to look at the world differently. Good music makes me think about how I perform. Fashion editorials make me think about color and shape. Books make me think about how I and characters handle situations. Strong women like Queen Elizabeth I, Artemisia Gentileschi, Esther, Renata Tebaldi, Jane Austen, and my mother make me want to be better person.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
AD: Community theatre is a wonderful place to express yourself and meet new people of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. It brings the opportunity to perform and see a beautiful, American form of art.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
AD: I'm so grateful to be a part of this show and GCP!

Thanks, Amanda!

"Singin' in the Rain" cast profile: Lexi DuFries

"Singin' in the Rain" lady-in-waiting Lexi DuFries talks to GCP Girl about magic and inspiration...

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
LD: At my high school, I performed in "Once Upon a Mattress," "Anything Goes," "Class Action" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." "Singin' in the Rain" is my first show since I started college.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
LD: Anything Goes. We had a great set and I loved the choreography, as well as the choreographer.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise?
LD: I feel that singing is my area of expertise because I have the most experience in it, then acting because I've started taking acting classes and I've come to find that I enjoy it. I'm slow to learn dancing but, with time and determination, I can do it!

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
LD: Just being a member of this cast because everyone is so talented and hilarious. I'm so grateful I've become a very small part of the large GCP family. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of performing again.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
LD: The solo "Singin' in the Rain" number at the end of Act 1. It's just so classic and the rain on stage is absolutely magical.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
LD: I can't choose just one! I would love to play Roxie or Velma from "Chicago," Elle Woods from "Legally Blonde," Elphaba from "Wicked" and maybe even Diana from "Next to Normal."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
LD: Above all, the love of Jesus Christ. I am also inspired by the truly magical moments in theatre when I get goosebumps up my arms, chills downs my spine and I am so overwhelmed with emotion I feel like I'm about to explode into tears or laughter. Whether I'm viewing or performing, I adore that rush and seek it as often as I can. I wish everyone in the world could feel that at least once in their life.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
LD: It is a way to satisfy my desire for theatre and a fantastically fun learning opportunity.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
LD: I thrive off of God, love, art, people and fun. Also, I tend to get pretty crazy at times, don't be alarmed, just smile and play along. :)

Thanks, Lexi! Tickets are available at Book Gallery West!!

"Singin' in the Rain" cast profile: Molly Knisley

Meet "Singin' in the Rain" cast member Molly Knisley, who plays Mrs. Simpson, wife of the studio head of Monumental Pictures!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
MK: I was Hippolyta in High Springs Community Theatre's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 2006. Then I did "Monty Python Vignettes" at Acrosstown. I went back to Shakespeare and was Gertrude in "Rosencrantz" at ART. I then played the Nazi maid in "Sound of Music" with the Star Center and went on to play the cop/butler and obnoxious pink lady in "Annie." My son, Ryan, was cast as Rooster in "Annie" and I volunteered my dog to be Sandy, and somehow I ended up with three roles in the show. My first GCP show was "It's A Wonderful Life" last Christmas.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
MK: "Monty Python" at ART was an amazing experience. We did improv during the show, which was something I had never done and I absolutely loved it.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, dancing or acting?
MK: I always wanted to be a dancer. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a ballerina. Unfortunately, at age 11, when all the girls in my ballet class were moving to pointe, my feet grew, as well as my two new best friends/worst enemies...My dance teacher suggested I stick with tap. I figured my prime as a dancer ended then. I always loved dancing, but as I got older opportunities to dance became almost nonexistent. I always loved musical theatre, but I wasn't the best actress and couldn't sing. I finally realized that if I wanted to continue to dance on stage, I'd need to learn how to sing and act.

GCP Girl: What has been your favorite part of the "Singin' in the Rain" experience so far?
MK: The choreography and dancing and the amazing cast. We're a team and we all support and help each other.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number in the show?
MK: Broadway Melody--without a doubt. This is a number I've always dreamed of dancing in.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
MK: Anything from "Chicago," Miss Hannigan in "Annie," Rosie in "Mamma Mia."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
MK: My children.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
MK: It is an opportunity for people who truly love theatre to practice their art and their passion. Community theatre people (actors/crew/techies/ushers, etc.) are the some of the most passionate and dedicated people I've ever met.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
MK: I've always dreamed of being on stage. I made a choice after I graduated high school to either take a risk and try to make it as a dancer, or to play it safe and get a college degree and have a career. I picked the safe route and have a master's degree in nursing and have an outstanding career as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have two wonderful children, too. I'm now pursuing my passion in the theatre. I see so many college kids pursuing their dreams now, and I often wonder, "What if....," but I love my family, my career and any role I have the privilege of playing.

Thanks, Molly! "Singin' in the Rain" resumes tonight at the Vam York!

"Singin' in the Rain" sneak preview with Shay Hudleston!

Here's today's special Halloween treat: a guest blog from GCP veteran dancer and "Singin' in the Rain" cast member Shay Hudleston! Read on...

Hi! I'm Shay Hudleston and I'm excited to blog for GCP girl!

The dedicated cast of "Singin' in the Rain" has put in many many hours of rehearsal! We're tired, our feet hurt, but we keep going. We can be caught in the lobby going over difficult dances between our scenes on a regular basis!

This week we had our first full run-through! It all came together pretty well considering we're still putting on finishing touches, and well, you know how first run-throughs go!

I'm really looking forward to seeing "Make 'Em Laugh"! Mike Testa has worked so hard to do just that and he's gonna have them rolling in the aisles! Of course, I'm also eager to do any of the numbers where I get to dance. That's what I live for!

As far as GCP productions go, I always think it's great to do a classic! This is definitely one of them! It brings generations together. Grandparents remember watching this show when it came out and grandchildren will love the excitement as if it's new. It's really a unique oportunity for audiences to share.

My personal favorite thing about this particular cast is the teamwork. There's stress about costumes (Marihelen Wheeler is a miracle worker, and I appreciate her and Laurel Ring and everyone else on that end of things!). There's stress about blocking. There's stress about singing and dancing. There's STRESS! Despite the stress, this cast keeps a positive attitude and we all pull together to work on it as a family! I guess we really are singing in the rain.

Thanks GCP Girl! And it's back to the theatre for me!

Thanks, Shay!! Don't forget, everyone, Preview and Opening Night are this week! More to come!

A Farewell Ode to "Shakespeare in Hollywood"

There are only three performances left of "Shakespeare in Hollywood" at the GCP! Make sure you see this show!

In honor of the show's closing, I have composed a VERY SERIOUS work I would like to share with you.

Ahem. Maestro, to the tune of "Jingle Bells," please:

VERSE
On a movie lot
In nineteen thirty-four
Jack Warner's girl is hot
But wants to be much more

Shakespeare's not their thing
It seems they're out of luck
Till Oberon and Puck arrive
And then things run amok

CHORUS
Oh, silver screen movie scenes
Joe Brown wears a dress
A purple flower has love's power
And things become a mess

VERSE
Lydia's smitten first
Dick Powell gets it next
Olivia drags Joe off
This show is oversexed

The party's out of hand
There is a massive fight
The fairy king steps in and then
His magic sets it right

CHORUS
Oh, silver screen movie scenes
Aunt Ethel gets a call
One wild night becomes dawn's light
And then things hit a wall

VERSE
The fairies start to fade
To Athens they'll return
But not before Hays sees
A lesson she must learn

The donkey head removed
Oberon takes his leave
But gives his love a gift
She'll never know that she received

CHORUS
Oh, silver screen movie scenes
The show's come to an end
Whether it's a happy one –
On you that all depends!

See you all at the Vam York this weekend for the final shows!!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Dan Scholes

Dan Scholes plays movie mogul Sam Warner, and also makes a cameo as Tarzan...

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
DS: I did some theatre stuff in high school and in college a long time ago. Mostly I've done shows at GCP – 20+ by now. I've done mostly tech work and backstage stuff. A little bit of everything. I do like getting on stage whenever possible.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
DS: According to the script, Sam's the dumb brother. He doesn't have a lot of lines, but he does have some really funny ones.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
DS: Learning how to do the Tarzan yell. It's really hard to do. I spent more time practicing with a Jonny Weismuller clip from YouTube than I did on anything else, and I still wish I could do it better. I'm working with such an awesome cast of people; they keep telling me not to sweat it.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
DS: Macbeth.

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
DS: This show has fairies with wings in it. Nuff said.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
DS: I never much thought about this before. Whatever role makes people laugh the most. I'm not real picky as long as it gets me on stage.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
DS: It's a place where people like me who have to do theatre and can't see their lives without it can come. We make our money doing other things, but our community theatre is home.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
DS: I'm single and lookin' for love.

Thanks, Dan! Remember, it's the last week to catch "Shakespeare" – the show closes on Sunday!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Carolyn Caracausa

Carolyn Caracausa returns to the GCP stage as Hollywood personality Louella Parsons...

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
CC: I have done over 20 shows at GCP and some in Venezuela, where I lived before Gainesville. I have also costumed several shows here.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
CC: Louella Parsons was a famous Hollywood gossip columnist who competed with Hedda Hopper for all the scoops on the stars.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
CC: Learning my lines! At my age it gets harder and harder!

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
CC: It is a fun show combining some of Shakespeare's wonderful characters with some of Hollywood's true-life personalities.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
CC: I have already played my dream role -- I played Mame at the GCP in 1991.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
CC: Community theater is a great place to make new friends who share your love of theatre and give non-professionals a chance to "strut their stuff" in front of an audience. And it gives our local audience a chance to see quality productions at an affordable price.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
CC: I love the GCP and all the friends I've made since we moved to Gainesville 21 years ago, and I am so enjoying working in the new theater for the first time. Thank God for the bathrooms in the dressing rooms! :-))

Thanks, Carolyn!!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Jonny Gersten

Jonny Gersten debuts at the GCP as the great Jimmy Cagney in "Shakespeare in Hollywood"...

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
JG: Unfortunately I don't get to do shows as much as I would like; that said, I usually try to audition for a play once a year wherever I can! My last performance was in a play titled "Eggshells on my Back," a student-written show put on by the Florida Players at UF over a year ago.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
JG: Jimmy did it all! He sang, danced and played a helluva gangster (among other things) throughout a 30+ year career!

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
JG: My biggest challenge was dealing with the ass head... that, and being on stage with Thomas in that beautiful blonde wig!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
JG: Hamlet.

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
JG: The cast is extremely fun/funny backstage!

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
JG: I'm not sure I have one yet...

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
JG: A community theatre provides a place for any/everyone to participate in the production of a play - and having that option is an amazing thing for any community!

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
JG: Smiling is my favorite.

Thanks, Jonny! Don't miss "Shakespeare in Hollywood" – the second week starts up tonight!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Graham Zinger

Graham Zinger plays Daryl, Jack Warner's yes-man, who is surprised to find himself as the object of affection of not one but two determined women...

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
GZ: I've been acting since I was very little, maybe eight or so, nothing serious. I started pursuing theatre seriously once I started high school. So far I've had some pretty interesting roles; my favorite would have to be Margaret Meade in "Hair." If you don't know about that part, I was basically a cross dresser and got to sing a solo completely in falsetto. I am also very active in my school's Thespian Society and have competed at Districts and State for the past three years and have gotten all excellents and superiors. This is my third show at the GCP, but I haven't done a show for about four years.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
GZ: I play the role of Daryl, who is the yes-man to Jack Warner. I mostly do whatever Warner tells me to, and most of my action comes in the third act and you'll see what I mean by "action" when you see the play.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
GZ: I thought it was going to be tough being in a show with a bunch of veterans of the GCP stage and not really knowing anyone, but everyone was welcoming and amazing. The real challenge for me was trying to be more militaristic. Pat wants me to stand up very straight and be stiff, which is very different from my usual posture.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
GZ: It's not really a Shakespeare play, but I read "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern" last year in my English class and I really liked it. I'm kind of into absurdest theatre.

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
GZ: I want people to know that this is a action-packed show, but there is a little bit of waiting until we get to that point. Also, it's a great show with an amazing cast and we've all worked very hard to make this show the best we could, and that we just want everyone to enjoy it.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
GZ: My dream role would probably be Melchior in "Spring Awakening." I have the right voice type for it, and the music is pretty but also rocks. It would be such a fun role to play, but a few of the scenes could be a bit awkward. I was Charlie Brown in "Snoopy" when I was 10 and I've always wanted to repeat that role.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
GZ: I think community theatre is exactly what it says it is, a community. When I come to rehearsals, auditions, and shows, I feel welcome and I know a lot of the people there. Let's face it, most theatre people are a little offbeat, and what's better than getting together with a group of people that share the same passion for theatre that you do?

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
GZ: I'm single. But seriously, I guess I would just like everyone to know that I am definitely cooler than Daryl.

Thanks, Graham! Looking forward to seeing you in action!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Laurel Ring

GCP musical theatre performer Laurel Ring branches into comedy as Olivia Darnell, a small town girl with stars in her eyes...

GCP Girl:
Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
LR: I've been singing and dancing on stage since I was four years old. At the GCP, I've been in productions of "Music Man," "Hot Mikado," and "Hello, Dolly!," and I played Rapunzel in the Star Center's "Into the Woods" last year. I also have been a regular soprano soloist in Handel's "Messiah."

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
LR: Olivia Darnell is a starlet about to appear in her first movie role, and she's completely star-struck by Hollywood -- and later, Oberon. She is based on Olivia deHavilland, who played the role of Hermia in the actual movie in 1935.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
LR: Where do I start?! This show was full of challenges for me, but if I have to choose one, it would be the last scene. There's a lot of pressure there to make it emotional and poignant, and I am not sure I am over stressing about it yet!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
LR: The 10-year-old in me still loves "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," since those are the plays I used to rehearse by myself from my grandmother's huge Shakespeare volume. As an adult, my favorite is "Much Ado About Nothing." I love the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick.

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
LR: This show will not be what you expect, but you will love it. It really is a funny show with an outstanding cast.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
LR: Christine in "Phantom of the Opera." I am dying to hit those notes! On the non-musical side, I would love to do some real Shakespeare...hint, hint...

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
LR: Personally, my return to theatre three years ago meant rediscovering a part of myself I had not realized was missing. My life is busier today than ever, but the quality has improved dramatically. In a larger sense, community theatre helps to bring culture and entertainment to the world.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
LR: Everyone should know how thankful I am, every day, to be part of this group. I owe huge thanks to our director, Pat Thomson, who is so patient with me; to the cast, for being wonderful; and to our dressers, who are kind enough to put up with my whirlwind costume changes!

Thanks, Laurel!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Jeremy Lambeth

Jeremy Lambeth's Oberon wanders into quite a different "wood near Athens" when he ends up on the set of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1930s Hollywood!

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
JL: Friends and fun are the reasons I keep returning to auditions. No role is too small and the memories are priceless. My previous experience spans the continental U.S. in roles from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" to Arsenic and Old Lace." I hope I can continue to support GCP while I pursue my academic goals at UF.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
JL: Oberon is the king of the fairies from William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Exhausted from the escapades of the previous night, his fuse is short. He's confused but inspired by his new surroundings in Hollywood.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
JL: As a lead, it's always a challenge to memorize your lines. Luckily, we have a great cast and crew that helped me through the process.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
JL: Personally, I've always been a fan of "The Merchant of Venice." It was my first Shakespearean performance and I learned a lot.

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
JL: SIH is a lot of fun. Leave your preconceived notions at the ticket taker, because this show is a riot!

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
JL: Every chance I get to share a character with an audience is a dream. In fact, my favorite roles are the ones with the fewest lines and I get an opportunity to create the character from scratch.

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
JL: Theatre is the greatest story-telling medium we possess. It's live, engaging and exhilarating. More people should experience the thrill of being on stage. The first time you charm a child in "The Wizard of Oz" or touch the heart of an audience in "Yours, Anne," you'll be hooked.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
JL: After this show I'm going to start an Overworked Fairies Support Group. ;)

Thanks, Jeremy! It's opening night – break a leg, everyone!!

"Shakespeare in Hollywood" Cast Profile: Amanda Gunn

Meet newcomer Amanda Gunn, who plays Brooklyn chorus girl-turned-starlet Lydia Lansing in GCP's "Shakespeare in Hollywood"!

GCP Girl: Tell me about your previous theatre experience.
AG: I haven't been involved since high school. I studied during my adolesence at Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Academy. I was always involved in middle and high school. It runs in the family.

GCP Girl: Tell me a little about your character.
AG: She's a slut. But she means well. Very sassy and street-smart. She knows what people want. Most of all, she knows what SHE wants.

GCP Girl: What was your biggest challenge in this show?
AG: Kissing another man for the first time since marrying my husband.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite Shakespearean play?
AG: "As You Like It."

GCP Girl: What do you want people to know about "Shakespeare in Hollywood"?
AG: It is incredibly witty and hilarious. It incorporates a great deal of 1930's American pop culture, which is actually quite interesting and fun to perform.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
AG: Sylvia Fowler in "The Women."

GCP Girl: What does community theatre mean to you?
AG: Having a real passion to perform without judgement. Let's face it, if you wanted money or fame, you'd be one of a million in the city.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you'd like everyone to know!
AG: It took me over a year to have the guts to audition for a GCP show. I am so glad I finally did. This has been an incredible experience. I've met some incredible people, overcome some major insecurities and most of all laughed harder than i've laughed in a long time. :)

Thanks, Amanda! See you at Preview!

"Peter Pan" Crew Profile: Kristin Paulson

"Peter Pan" Sound Designer Kristin Paulson checks in to tell us about her take on the show!
GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows at GCP.
KP: Haha, where to begin?? If you've seen or been in a show during the past two seasons, you've heard my sound!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite fairy tale or children's story and why?
KP: Wow...what a question to ask a children's literature major! Of course I love "Peter Pan" and "Alice in Wonderland," but my all-time favorite has to be "The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde," an Italian fairy tale about a beautiful yet evil princess who turns her suitors into beads on a necklace to avoid marriage. I know she's evil, but I always kind of liked her... :-)

GCP Girl: What is your favorite part of the "Peter Pan" story?
KP: My favorite and least favorite parts are the same--when the Darling children leave the nursery for Neverland. It just encapsulates childhood so well---it truly shows Barrie's idea that children are "innocent and heartless." They are SO excited to be going on this adventure, but they forget the parents they've left behind without a warning. It's heartbreaking in a gorgeous way.

GCP Girl: Why do you think "Peter Pan" is performed so often around the world?
KP: Because you've got something for everyone--pirates, Indians, flying....and in Neverland, the children will never grow up and the adults never really did either.

GCP Girl: Tell me something about yourself you would like everyone to know!
KP: I'll be cutting back on the shows I do next season. (Yes, I know...I can hear you all crying from here!) I have a thesis to write for my Master's degree. But I'm assistant directing "Nuncrackers" and "The Producers," so I better see everyone at auditions!!!

GCP Girl: What do you hope audiences take away from "Peter Pan"?
KP: Well, since I'm ME, I honestly hope people go away thinking, "I need to read that book!" :-) But really, I hope they enjoy the escape from reality for a couple hours, and keep that sense of fun and whimsy for as long as possible.

GCP Girl: What was/is your vision for bringing this show to life?
KP: Well, there's not a lot I can do except make sure you can hear people! But I'll try to make sure you can hear them exceptionally well! ;-)
Thanks, Kristin! Remember, everyone, you just have this week and next to catch "Peter Pan" before it closes!
