GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
KH: This is my first show I have ever done.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
KH: "Pippin" is, of course, my favorite show, because it has been my only role, unless you count that 15-minute skit where I played Uncle Jessie from the "Dukes of Hazzard" way back in my high school days! ;)

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
KH: I know acting is an art acquired over time but I would say acting is my first area of abilities. I do not fear public speaking and can carry a tune so singing would be a close second. This "dancing" thing is new to me and comes in a dead last for my abilities. Now, if you want to go to a club and dance, or maybe do the swing, I am your man.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
KH: My icon is a sword/dagger and it represents my character, Charlemagne. He is all about the sword solving every problem.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
KH: My line in the show, "Home is where the heart is," really is the entire drive of the show plot. As much as Pippin revolts and experiments with life he ultimately comes back to his own
'home." The overall theme of broadening your experiences, figuring out what paths to avoid and finding what makes you happy is relevant advice to anyone.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
KH: The Phantom from "Phantom of the Opera." I know sounds like pie in the sky and I do not know if I have the voice to pull it off, but the music from "Phantom" is great. Every time I have gone to see the show I wanted to walk on the street and burst into song. It really
is inspiring.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
KH: "If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." Ben Franklin

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
KH: My wife and little boy, AKA the family that I love! My wife has been incredibly supportive of me with the play. I cannot thank her enough.

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
KH: I AM a giant in the bedroom! ;-)

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Sarah Welch

"Pippin" Player Sarah Welch brings her vocal talent to the GCP for her second show...

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
SW: This is my second show at GCP (or anywhere). My first was Jane Eyre. :-)

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
SW: I think this show as a player has been my favorite as it is really pushing me farther to learn how to dance and sing at the same time. I have never had to dance like this before, so it's been exciting to learn all the new choreography. I feel as if both shows I've done have pushed me in different ways to grow as a performer, and that is all I could ever ask for.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
SW: Singing has always been my comfort zone, although I am hoping for that to change. ;)

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
SW: My icon is the treble and bass clefs shaped to a heart. I felt this was best as music defines all that I do.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
SW: I hope they enjoy it and want to see more GCP shows in the future!

GCP Girl: What is your dream role and why?
SW: Sarah in "Ragtime." (Yes, I know I'm not black.) I just love that musical, and especially Sarah's solos; I feel I could really capture her.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
SW: "Clarity of mind means clarity of passion, too; this is why a great and clear mind loves ardently and sees distinctly what it loves." -Blaise Pascal

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
SW: The feeling I have when people appreciate my creative efforts. It inspires me to do better and be better for them.

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
SW: I just wish I could tell everyone in the cast and crew how much I truly admire them! They each have their own talents that make them wonderful role models. Yes, for ME! :-)

"Daddy's Dyin'" auditions

Don't forget –  the second night of "Daddy's Dyin': Who's Got the Will?" auditions is tonight at 7 p.m. at the Vam York Theater.  I hear there was a pretty good turnout last night, so hurry over there tonight if you want to read for it!

"Pippin" is dark tonight and tomorrow, but we'll be back on Wednesday.  The cast deserves a rest!

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Malik Grady

"Pippin" Leading Player Malik Grady opens up on Opening Night...

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.

MG: My debut was as the only "brother" (but not a brother) in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," then I was in "Hot Mikado" as Pooh-Bah, a storyteller in the Star Center's "Once on this Island," assistant director and a performer in "Hello, Dolly!," The Wolf and Cinderella's Father in "Into the Woods" at the Star Center, Robert the Butler in "Jane Eyre," Crachit, Marley and Ivory in "They Sing Xmas up in Harlem," and the Chessmaster Gregory in the 2009 Hoggetowne Medieval Faire.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite role?

MG: My favorite role until now was Pooh-Bah in "Hot Mikado" alongside the sublime Golden Apple award-winning tandem of Thomas Sanders and Susan Christophy as Ko-Ko and Katisha, respectively.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise – singing, acting or dancing?

MG: My expertise is getting along with just about anyone and usually managing not to be the weak link in shows.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?

MG: My Pippin icon is a stick figure representation of my hat coming down over me with only one eye -- an EVIL eye, to show my status as a tempter and trickster.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?

MG: I hope that people come away from "Pippin" convinced that the GCP has turned a page in terms of taking risks and doing different types of plays and musicals.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?

MG: My dream role is Othello -- to be able to THE iconic black role and do it well, alongside great actors would be unbelievable.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?

MG: I'll give you 2 quotes from the aforementioned "Othello":
"...then must you speak of one that loved not wisely but too well..."
"...it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

GCP Girl: What inspires you?

MG: I'm inspired by the possibility of doing God's Will and bearing witness by my life to those I would help of His Power, Will and Way of Life.

MG: I am left-handed.

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Lola Hassan-Adams

GCP veteran Lola Hassan-Adams plays Fastrada, Pippin's stepmother, in a performance that is sure to leave the audience with an Oedipus complex!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
LHA: At the GCP, I've been in "Grease," "A Little Night Music," "Hello, Dolly!," "Jane Eyre," and "Ain't Misbehavin'." I have also been in productions of "The Wiz," "Praying for Rain," "Bleacher Bums," "St.Hugo of Central Park," and "Into The Woods." (There are a lot more, but it would take too long.)

GCP Girl: What were your favorite roles?
LHA: I have a three-way tie: Rizzo in "Grease," Ernestina Money in "Hello, Dolly!," and Fastrada in "Pippin" (I hope,...I'm sure it will be).

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
LHA: I'm an actor that can sing and act like I can dance!

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
LHA: It's an abstract butterfly that represents my little sister with cerebral palsy.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
LHA: Life is about the choices you make. Don't let people make those choices for you. Love fully and openly, and live your life for yourself, or someone else will live it for you.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role and why?
LHA: I have two. (I'm a pain, I know.)
The Wicked Witch of the West
As much as I love Elpheba, I am referring to the classic Wicked Witch. Ever since I was little I've LOVED the bad guys, they didn't frighten me they intrigued me. The wicked witch of the west epitomizes that "bad guy" essence for me. SO much fun!
Ms. Hannigan ("Annie")
Kind of the same reason as the wicked witch, but in addition I learned how to "act" by watching Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. Ms. Hannigan is one of my FAVORITE Carol Burnett roles.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
LHA: "Anything smaller than a size five is a little boy with Boobs!" Anita Blake

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
LHA: My friends (cheesy,  I know, but true).

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
LHA: If you EVER consider acting, PLEASE give it a try. There is nothing more amazing than being on stage. Never doubt yourself and think "I could never do that," because you can and will do it if you put your mind to it. Anyone can act, including you. The trick is to "act" like you're not acting. ;0)

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Brandon Telg

"Pippin" Player Brandon Telg waxes philosophical about guitars, new ideas, and the meaning of Pippin's journey.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
BT: I have been in "Loot" and "The Secret Garden" and tech crewed for "It's a Wonderful Life" at GCP. Also recently, I stage managed "Falsettos" at the Acrosstown. I don't know how far back to go with this, but I will mention that I was in a performance group similar to STOMP last year and I had some lead roles in plays at my high school. But that's probably more information than you wanted.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show or role?
BT: My favorite role that I've played was easily Fred Graham in "Kiss Me, Kate." Back at my high school, I was able to play the lead in this musical and it was a blast.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
BT: Out of those three choices... acting.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
BT: Well, I drew a guitar but since it was not easy to graphically reproduce, it has been changed to the Chinese symbol for guitar. I chose this because when we were doing character work one night, we were told to come up with a backstory for our "Players" and mine was essentially the ghost of a Nashville rock and roller. Then we were told to draw a graphic that represents our character. So I thought that meant something that represents the character I created. So, a guitar.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
BT: Tough question. The story is a very multifaceted one and I mostly just hope that people "get it," but I think the message that no man is an island pervades through the story. Pippin wants to go his own way, not really caring much about anyone else in his life but himself, only to discover in the end that a person has to care about others to live a fulfilled life.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
BT: Leaf Coneybear in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." I feel that I can play the awkward, goofy and sincere character type well and this character is exactly that. Besides, that show in general would just be fun to work on in any capacity. Or Robert in "Company." I'd have to get a bit older to be able to pull this one off, but he has some amazing songs to sing.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
BT: "Every disease is a musical problem, every cure is a musical solution."-Novalis

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
BT: New ideas inspire me. Well, let me rephrase that, since there are really no new ideas under the sun. Learning about things I don't know inspires me. Discovering how much we all really have in common inspires me. The radio program "This American Life" inspires me.

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
BT: Starting in the fall, I will be attending UCF. I have been accepted into their BFA Stage Management program, so I am very excited about that.

Student Ticket Prices for "Pippin"!

Here's a new and welcome change: Students may buy tickets at the door during the last 30 minutes before curtain (between 7:30 p.m.-8 p.m. for evening shows 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. for matinees) for only $10.  You'll need your student ID, and you should get there as early as possible to get good seats. You also might want to call ahead to the Book Gallery West earlier in the day to see if the show is sold out first.

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Savannah Radcliffe

Meet Savannah Radcliffe, one of the "Pippin" players, who is celebrating her first show at the GCP!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
SR: I haven't done anything at GCP since I just moved here, but I've been in shows back in Tampa's community theater like "Cinderella" and "Scrooge the Musical."

GCP Girl: What was your favorite role?
SR: One time I worked at a kids theater camp, and I got to be Giselle when they did a shorter kids' version of "Enchanted." It was really awesome to be a princess and work with the kids, so even though it wasn't a real professional show, it was awesome to be that character all summer and have kids call me "princess." That was nice.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
SR: Definitely singing. I've been singing since I was 3, though I have started dancing this year and really love it.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
SR: Mine is a leaf because my costume is going to have leaves incorporated in it, and because I'm good at drawing leaves and not much else.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
SR: I hope they like it and have a fun time. =)

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
SR: Jo in "Little Women the Musical."  It's my favorite show, and Jo has such a great sense of humor and gets to belt a lot.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
SR: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."

SR: I like to make people happy, so I always try to make people smile when I am performing. The audience inspires me to give the best performance I can. =)

SR: Hopefully I'll be studying theater in New York this summer, and starting in the fall, I will be attending UCF. I plan to get my BFA in musical theatre and minor in childhood education.

Not to interrupt the lovefest we've got going on here, but we do have some actual business to conduct.  First of all, in case it sneaked up on you, "Pippin" opens this week!!!!! Yesterday was the cue-to-cue technical rehearsal, followed by an actual rehearsal (followed by a rehearsal hangover today for all involved, I'm sure).  The preview performance is this Thursday, and opening night is Friday!! Tickets for preview are $5 at the door only; for all other performances, they are $16 at Book Gallery West or at the door the night of the performance (although tickets at the door are not guaranteed, so if you want to be certain, get them early at BGW).  Please note that although Sarah Viscovich will be playing the role of Catherine throughout the regular run of the show, Elizabeth Dean will play the role at preview, so friends of both ladies will want to make the necessary arrangements.

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Katie Crozier

Katie Crozier returns to the GCP stage as Pippin's grandmother, Berthe, who has a unique outlook on life and a lesson for the young hero.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
KC: I was involved with many shows at Wesleyan College, too many to mention. Some of my favorite rolls were Kess in "Independence," Agnes in "Dancing at Lughnasa," Martirio in "House of Bernada Alba" and Road Wanderer in "Land of the Dragon." I also made my directing debut with "Funeral Tea." This will be my third time on the GCP stage. Previous shows were "Cinderella," where I danced and sang in the chorus, and "Hot Mikado," where I played Peep Bo.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite role?
KC: I have to say the role of Road Wanderer in the Chinese children's play "Land of the Dragon" has been the most fun to do, but my current role at Berthe may surpass that.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
KC: I consider myself to be a Dancer first, an Actor second and a Singer third.... but honestly, if the song and character are well suited for my voice, then I think I'm a pretty balanced performer.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
KC: I chose the triple moon. It dipicts the three phases of the moon ( waxing, full and waning) which represents the three phases of womanhood (maiden, mother, crone).

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
KC: I hope people hear Berthe's lesson. There are wonderful things all around and all we need to do is slow down a little and enjoy them. Life is rich and interesting, you just have to pay attention to what really matters. Tomorrow is no guarantee but today is already here. Make the most of it.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role and why?
KC: If I ever get the chance to play Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" I will die happy (ok, ok, I'll die happy anyway.. but playing her would be icing on an already delicious cake!). Sally is a true hedonist. She lives in the now and wants to enjoy every moment of her life. And has some amazing songs! "Life is a Cabaret ol' chum..."

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
KC: "Be the change you wish to see in the world" ~Gandhi

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
KC: Honest living, compassion, kindness, self awareness and love.

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
KC: This experience with "Pippin" has reminded me how much I love performing. I really feel at home in this character which has allowed much stifled creativity to flow freely.

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Scott McPherson

Here's my interview with "Pippin" Player Scott McPherson. This is Scott's second show at GCP.  He and his lovely wife, Ashley (the vocal director for "Pippin"), are expecting their first baby this summer!

And yes, the questions are the same for everyone.  I am very busy, and everyone has different answers, so don't judge me. ;-)

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.

SM: "Hello, Dolly!" at GCP, and after that, "Into the Woods" at the STAR Center. That's it.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show or role?
SM: I was Cinderella's Prince in "Into the Woods," which has been my only role, but "Hello, Dolly!" was probably more fun for me.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
SM: I think that is for the audience to judge! The singing is probably the biggest work in progress though. I can say I've gotten better in the last year, so that's been pretty cool.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
SM: XIX is the roman numeral "19" -- which has been an important number for me since birth.

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
SM: There are so many talented people who give to GCP, and so many people who have given to make it what it has become. I can only just hope to live up to their standards and be part of something that continues the legacy of work that has been done. I'm sure the old standard will enjoy it, but more than anything, I think I love overhearing people as they leave say, "That was so much better than I expected" or, "I didn't think community theater could be so good!" If we get just one person who adds GCP to the things they attend for entertainment -- I think we've done our part.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
SM: I have two, I think. First would be Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar" - for the same reason most guys probably like the role--Gesthemane. The second would probably be Roger in "Rent". I can't quite put a finger on why, but he just seems like he'd be fun to act/sing.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
SM: This changes from day to day, but the one solid quote I love hearing happens every morning when I leave for work, or the gym. My wife, half-asleep, says "Good bye, baby. I love you so much. Drive safe." Then her head hits the pillow and she's back asleep. It never fails, and is always a perfect start to the day.

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
SM: In work - providing for my family. In theater - having an outlet to make work worth going through. In life - my wife (hey look, I'm a poet!).

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
SM: "Pippin" has been a good experience for me. Naturally, as a novice to theater performance, I had inhibitions about certain things (dancing--for example). Well, as I hope you get to see -- this show requires you to let go of those inhibitions or else it just won't work. It's been a lot of fun, and I think you'll enjoy it. I also want everyone to know how proud I am of Ashley. She was very unsure of how she would be as the Vocal Director of a GCP production; and I think she did a fantastic job. I am sure that you all will agree when you come see the show.

"Pippin" Cast Profile: Crystal Coleman

Now that the show is getting closer, I'll be profiling members of the cast and crew to get everyone in the spirit.  Our first victim/subject/guinea pig is one of our Players, Crystal Coleman.  Crystal brings a lot of experience to "Pippin," and we will be seeing more of her next season.  Read on!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
CC: Going back to high school, chorus roles in "Crazy For You," "42nd Street," "Li'l Abner" and understudying Frenchie in "Grease," as well as being rehearsal prompter for God's Favorite and Student Director for "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" (All BHS) and Elaine in "Arsenic and Old Lace" (Acrosstown). In college, Barbara Allen in "Dark of the Moon" and Rosamund in "The Robber Bridegroom." In the past couple of years, Violet in "It's a Wonderful Life" at High Springs Community Theater, Snout and Assistant Director in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (HSCT), Director of "Prelude to a Kiss" (HSCT) and Assistant Director of the smash hit "Leading Ladies" at GCP.

GCP Girl: What was your favorite show?
CC: I think every show has had its moments of favorite-ness for me. "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" was the first show I AD'd (in high school), so that holds a special place. "Wonderful Life" got me back into theatre after a few years' break. "Midsummer" was full of a terrific, crazy cast who all loved Harry Potter... and the show closed the weekend the last book came out. Good times. "Prelude" was my baby and I was so happy to see it come to fruition. "Leading Ladies" was a great experience and I was surrounded by an amazing director, production team and cast. And I'm having so much fun in "Pippin," challenging myself and getting to know all the wonderful people at GCP even more. So, I can't really pick.

GCP Girl: What do you feel is your area of expertise - singing, acting or dancing?
CC: Definitely not dancing... I try really really hard, though. I think acting is. If I can't sing a song perfectly, I can act the heck out of it if it's funny or emotional.

GCP Girl: What does your "Pippin" icon represent?
CC: That I'm kind of a geek. It's the Seal of Rassilon from the BBC series "Doctor Who." 

GCP Girl: What do you hope people take away from "Pippin"?
CC: Mostly, I hope the fun that we had putting it together translates in some small way to everyone who sees it. I hope that people who've never seen a show at GCP or at all come see it and it makes them want to see more and more and come back for all the great shows that GCP produces.

GCP Girl: What is your dream role?
CC: Oooh... it changes all the time. Beatrice in "Much Ado About Nothing" is definitely a list topper, but that's a dream show that I'd love to direct, too (and my university did it a couple years after I left... ARGH!). As for musicals, Cathy in "The Last Five Years" or Amy in "Company" are my serious and funny (respectively) dream roles. So, you know... if anyone wants to propose "Company" for the '10-'11 season, you've got one auditioner already. My dream show for directing would be someday, eventually, far away from here, to direct a version of "Eurydice," which is the amazing play running at The Hipporome Theatre until March 22nd. It's one of the best scripts I've ever read, and the production there is amazing and lovely and touching and heartbreaking.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite quote?
CC: Currently, "It is never too late to be who you might have been." - George Eliot

GCP Girl: What inspires you?
CC: My wonderful husband, Chris, who supports me in everything I do and is the rare husband who will come out and help with set construction and enjoy doing it. My family, who come see everything I'm in, even if they know they won't like it. My friends, who are some of the most wonderful, amazing, creative, caring and spectacular people in the world. My day job... I'm the office manager at The Hippodrome by day, and so I'm surrounded by theatre and creativity and getting paid for it.

GCP Girl: Tell me one thing about yourself you would like everyone to know!
CC: That I've absolutely loved being in "Pippin" and want to recognize the amazing production team for guiding us to create what's going to be a great production of the show that's got something in it for everyone. I think the hard work that both the production team and cast have put in is really going to show in how polished and enjoyable the final product will be.
Oh, and also, that I'll be directing Nuncrackers at GCP for Christmas 2009, and that it took a lot of restraint not to plug that earlier in this piece! I'm really excited about it and can't wait to start getting to work with my awesome production team.

2009-10 Season News!!

Everyone can start planning their lives for the next year now– the shows have been chosen for next season!  The lineup for 2009-10 includes "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Singin' in the Rain," "The Producers" and "Nuncrackers" for the musicals, and "Shakespeare in Hollywood," "Funny Money" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" for the plays.  Time slots are TBA and of course, everything is subject to rights availability (as we all know all too well).  Next season sounds really exciting!  Thanks especially to the selection committee; the job is not easy, and we appreciate all the hard work.

As for "Pippin"... the preview performance is in TWO WEEKS!  Tickets go on sale soon, so keep an eye out.  Stay tuned to my blog in the next couple of weeks for cast and crew profiles, behind-the-scenes looks at the production and more!
