2013 Golden Apple Awards: The Results!

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2012-2013 season a success. GCP is truly a community organization and it would not be possible without the support from every member of the GCP family. From the actors and technicians to the audience members and the front of house staff, everyone plays a role in making the shows come to life.

Last Saturday we honored this season past and recognized a handful of the individuals who made it all possible. While it would never be feasible to give a Golden Apple to every single person who donated time, energy and funds to the theatre, please know that this place would not be possible without you. Thank you for your part in creating this home away from home for so many creative souls.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" cast profile: Chris Shaw

GCP newcomer Chris Shaw takes Tuckahoe County by storm as Huckleberry Finn in "The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer".

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or character.
Chris: Huck is a bit of an outcast in Tuckahoe County. The adults in St. Petersburg don't like their kids playing with Huck because he's a "good for nothin'" child who doesn't abide by the rules of society (mainly because he doesn't know what the rules are that he should follow). All Huck really wants is a normal life and to be accepted by everybody in the town...at least in Tom Sawyer. He goes off and does a bunch of other stuff in a different book but you get the idea ;)

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Chris: I haven't really been in many shows before Tom Sawyer. My first show ever in was "RENT" at Eastside High School where I played Roger Davis. Then I performed as Judge Danforth at GHS for their production of "The Crucible", followed by "Schoolhouse Rock: Live!" where I played mandolin and sang a few solos at Eastside, and now "Tom Sawyer"!

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Chris: I actually was pre-cast as Jesus Christ in the upcoming EHS production of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and I thought that it would be a really good idea to get as much acting under my belt as I possibly could before I took on such a huge role. Plus when I saw who else was auditioning for the show, I knew that it was going to be a fabulous cast!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number or scene in the show?
Chris: I actually enjoy Murrell's Gold the most. I don't sing in it, but I love to sit offstage and listen to Ed and Mike kill it!

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Chris: Say what you will, but I just LOVE getting slashed with a knife.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Chris: It's a show that everyone can relate to, no matter how old or what background they might come from. Everyone was a kid once and this show really lets them slip back into what it was like to get messy outside and cause mischief.

GCP Girl: Mark Twain's book has been a favorite for generations. What is one of your favorite summer reads?
Chris: I Am America (and so can you!) by Stephen Colbert. It's the first book to actually make me laugh allowed.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Chris: I'm in a local band called Wayland that just recently finished recording the content for our upcoming LP entitled "The Alchemist" that is currently in the post-production stage. Also, I'm currently working on a 6 song solo EP that should be finished around fall of this year. You can purchase Wayland's first release from the album at http://wayland.bandcamp.com/track/lullaby

Thanks, Chris!

Go checkout his song and then be sure to catch the show this weekend! The show will close on Sunday, August 4. Visit the GCP website or the Event Page on Facebook for show time and ticket information.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" cast profile: Andy Hunn

Barbershop quartet singer, Andy Hunn stretches his acting muscles as Pap and the Sheriff in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or characters.
Andy: Pap is Huck Finn's dad who is a drunk. The sheriff got his job because he is the mayor's brother-in-law.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Andy: I played Ed Sullivan for a one performance show two years in a row. I also sang back up vocals in GCP's "White Christmas" in 2012.

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Andy: I like musicals and thought that this one might be fun to do.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number or scene in the show?
Andy: The cave scene is my favorite because the Reverend tells the kids all of the perils that can happen to them in the cave, then tells them to go enjoy themselves.

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Andy: Being able to portray two very different characters.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Andy: It's light-hearted, fun, and nostalgic. It reflects upon a simpler time in history.

GCP Girl: Mark Twain's book has been a favorite for generations. What is one of your favorite summer reads?
Andy: Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn were my summer reads as a kid.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Andy: My barbershop quarter opened for The Drifters who did a benefit concert in Gainesville recently.

Thanks, Andy!

Don't miss your chance to catch "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" this weekend. The final performance is Sunday, August 4. Visit the GCP Website or the Event Page on Facebook for show time and ticket information.
