Dan: Marvin K Mooney. It was the tale my dad read to me and I read to my son over and over. By far my favorite.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Dan: I think that the mayor of Who falsified his birth certificate and was actually a citizen of Whatville and not Whoville. And since this is the case, we accidentally elected a non-citizen who that should immediately remove himself from office. We should then have a new election which will obviously end in an overwhelming win for Cindy Lou Who.

Thanks, Dan!

'Lend Me a Tenor' cast profile: Michael Glover

Michael Glover is the nervous and awkward Max in 'Lend Me a Tenor'.

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or characters.
Michael: Max is a nervous wreck and doormat, unlucky in love and socially graceless. But he has a lovely singing voice. In theory.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Michael: My first show at GCP was 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in which I was a terrible, abusive bigot. Luckily I haven't been typecast. I've also been in 'The Producers' and 'Funny Money' at GCP as well as 'Chapter Two', 'Hunter-Gatherers' and 'An Evening of Hamlets' at the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre. I've also recently mounted 'Back to the Future: The Musical', which I perform nightly alone in my apartment.

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Michael: I was told there would be ice cream at the auditions. There was no ice cream.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite moment or scene in the show?
Michael: It's truly hard to choose a favorite. Working with everyone has been a complete honor and joy. However, my girlfriend would like me to issue the following statement: "My least favorite part in Lend Me a Tenor is when I kiss pretty ladies." Thank you for allowing me to use this forum for that. Things were getting a little tense for me.

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Michael: It's always fun to find out what the audience will find funny and I look forward to making people laugh with something new each night.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?

GCP Girl: If you had to sing a song to save the day, what song would you sing?
Michael: "Say Hi to Your Mom for Me (Biff's Lament)" the stirring ballad of unrequited love from the aforementioned Back to the Future: The Musical.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Michael: Santa Claus is real. All you have to do is open your heart and you'll find there's a little bit of Santa in all of us. The Santa in me sure likes pizza!

Thanks, Michael!

Laura Jackson is spoiled yet charming as Maggie Saunders in 'Lend Me a Tenor'.

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or characters.
Laura: Maggie is the daughter of Henry Saunders, manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera. She is also Max's girlfriend, but has a huge crush on the famous Il Stupendo (Tito). She's a little spoiled and quite naïve, but has just enough charm to pull it off!

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Laura: Most recently I was in "The Vagina Monologues" at the Hipp's Cinema Theatre. I have worked at the Acrosstown in "Chapter Two" and "Play It Again, Sam." I also did shows in my home state of Georgia, my favorite being "The Bald Soprano."

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Laura: I was dying to do a show, and had some free time in my schedule. I read about the play and thought it could really be challenging and fun. I had also heard great things about our director (Carlos Asse).

GCP Girl: What is your favorite moment or scene in the show?
Laura: My favorite moment is when the real Tito sees the fake Tito and runs out, bewildered and confused. Tito's reaction cracks me up every night! It's also the start of the play's climax, when everything begins to unravel...

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Laura: I am looking forward to working with a group of highly talented people with the added energy of an audience.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Laura: Because it is truly hilarious. It takes a lot to make me laugh and I have been working on this show for a month straight, yet I still laugh out loud whenever I get to watch parts of it.

GCP Girl: If you had to sing a song to save the day, what song would you sing?
Laura: Right now I would sing "All I Do Is Dream of You" because it's constantly in my head (my character hums it in the show). Not sure how that would save the day, though...

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know:
Laura: This is my first show at the GCP, and I am so excited! To quote Maggie, "it was even better than I thought it would be!"

Thanks, Laura! We're glad you've joined the GCP family!

'Lend Me a Tenor' cast profile: Kate Hall

Kate Hall is the saucy and passionate Maria Merelli in 'Lend Me a Tenor'.

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or characters:
Kate: Maria Merelli is the saucy Italian wife of opera singer, Tito Merelli. Her love for Tito is strong, but may appear questionable to others, due to their loud disagreements. She is an honest Italian woman with a hot passionate temper, whose actions are actually justifiable. In times of distress, she is not afraid to say what is on her mind, even if it is just by giving a look. Maria seems to be tough and well put together, but on the inside she is complete mush. One of my favorite qualities about Maria are her underlying insecurities that appear obvious to others, but not to her. She is not the type who would proudly own up to their insecurities. I love this about Maria, because it makes her relatable and real.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Kate: I have had the marvelous opportunity of performing in productions such as,"The Women," "The Vagina Monologues," performing "I was in the room," "Ladyhouse Blues," and "A New Way To Pay Old Debts."

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Kate: Well, I've always wanted to do a show at GCP! I always heard wonderful things about the company. But the main reason I auditioned for Lend Me a Tenor was simply because I desperately missed performing on stage! I had been doing shows since I was 13 years old and when I took a break from performing to focus on school at the University of Florida, I became practically homesick for it. Now that I've graduated, I now have the opportunity to do that and enjoy it!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite moment or scene in the show?
Kate: My favorite scene in the show is the bedroom scene between Tito and Maria. I do not want to give too much of it away, but I will say this, things escalade quickly between the two and it is absolutely hilarious!

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "Lend Me a Tenor"?
Kate: The thing I most look forward to about performing in "Lend Me a Tenor" is hearing laughter. Best sound in the world!

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Kate: People should see this show, because it is incredibly entertaining! I don't think I've ever seen a comedy quite as entertaining as this. When I read the script for the first time, I could not put it down, because it was so clever and outrageously funny. It is impossible to become bored when watching this show.

GCP Girl: If you had to sing a song to save the day, what song would you sing?
Kate: If I had to sing a song to save the day, it would have to be "You Only Get What You Give" by New Radicals.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Kate: I would like everyone to know that this experience of performing in "Lend Me a Tenor" has been a life changing opportunity for me! I could not have asked to have been part of a better cast and crew! I would also like everyone to know that you will not be disappointed by coming to see this show! I know a lot of people say that in order to get you to actually come to a show, but in this case, I can honestly say that you would be missing out on seeing one of the most amazing comedies you will ever see in your lifetime!

Thanks, Kate!

Don't miss GCP newcomer Kate Hall as Maria Merelli in 'Lend Me a Tenor'. The show closes this Sunday, September 29, so make your plans now! Please visit the GCP Website or the Event Page on Facebook for more information.

Henry: My favorite scenes (I can't pick just one) are those involving mistaken identity. If I had to pick one, I'd say it's when Tito misinterprets what Diana means when she says she is a "professional."

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Henry: People should see the show because it is great fun.

GCP Girl: If you had to sing a song to save the day, what song would you sing?
Henry: Oh, boy. I'm afraid that the day would not be saved.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Henry: I'd like everyone to know that 5 Guys makes the best cheeseburgers in Gainesville.

Thanks, Henry!

You can catch GCP favorite Henry Wihnyk in this hilarious show until September 29. For more information, please visit the GCP Website or the 'Lend Me a Tenor' Facebook Event Page.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" cast profile: Chris Shaw

GCP newcomer Chris Shaw takes Tuckahoe County by storm as Huckleberry Finn in "The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer".

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or character.
Chris: Huck is a bit of an outcast in Tuckahoe County. The adults in St. Petersburg don't like their kids playing with Huck because he's a "good for nothin'" child who doesn't abide by the rules of society (mainly because he doesn't know what the rules are that he should follow). All Huck really wants is a normal life and to be accepted by everybody in the town...at least in Tom Sawyer. He goes off and does a bunch of other stuff in a different book but you get the idea ;)

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Chris: I haven't really been in many shows before Tom Sawyer. My first show ever in was "RENT" at Eastside High School where I played Roger Davis. Then I performed as Judge Danforth at GHS for their production of "The Crucible", followed by "Schoolhouse Rock: Live!" where I played mandolin and sang a few solos at Eastside, and now "Tom Sawyer"!

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Chris: I actually was pre-cast as Jesus Christ in the upcoming EHS production of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and I thought that it would be a really good idea to get as much acting under my belt as I possibly could before I took on such a huge role. Plus when I saw who else was auditioning for the show, I knew that it was going to be a fabulous cast!

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number or scene in the show?
Chris: I actually enjoy Murrell's Gold the most. I don't sing in it, but I love to sit offstage and listen to Ed and Mike kill it!

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Chris: Say what you will, but I just LOVE getting slashed with a knife.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Chris: It's a show that everyone can relate to, no matter how old or what background they might come from. Everyone was a kid once and this show really lets them slip back into what it was like to get messy outside and cause mischief.

GCP Girl: Mark Twain's book has been a favorite for generations. What is one of your favorite summer reads?
Chris: I Am America (and so can you!) by Stephen Colbert. It's the first book to actually make me laugh allowed.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Chris: I'm in a local band called Wayland that just recently finished recording the content for our upcoming LP entitled "The Alchemist" that is currently in the post-production stage. Also, I'm currently working on a 6 song solo EP that should be finished around fall of this year. You can purchase Wayland's first release from the album at http://wayland.bandcamp.com/track/lullaby

Thanks, Chris!

Go checkout his song and then be sure to catch the show this weekend! The show will close on Sunday, August 4. Visit the GCP website or the Event Page on Facebook for show time and ticket information.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" cast profile: Andy Hunn

Barbershop quartet singer, Andy Hunn stretches his acting muscles as Pap and the Sheriff in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".

GCP Girl: Tell me a bit about your character or characters.
Andy: Pap is Huck Finn's dad who is a drunk. The sheriff got his job because he is the mayor's brother-in-law.

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Andy: I played Ed Sullivan for a one performance show two years in a row. I also sang back up vocals in GCP's "White Christmas" in 2012.

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Andy: I like musicals and thought that this one might be fun to do.

GCP Girl: What is your favorite musical number or scene in the show?
Andy: The cave scene is my favorite because the Reverend tells the kids all of the perils that can happen to them in the cave, then tells them to go enjoy themselves.

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Andy: Being able to portray two very different characters.

GCP Girl: Why should people see this show?
Andy: It's light-hearted, fun, and nostalgic. It reflects upon a simpler time in history.

GCP Girl: Mark Twain's book has been a favorite for generations. What is one of your favorite summer reads?
Andy: Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn were my summer reads as a kid.

GCP Girl: Tell me something you'd like everyone to know.
Andy: My barbershop quarter opened for The Drifters who did a benefit concert in Gainesville recently.

Thanks, Andy!

Don't miss your chance to catch "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" this weekend. The final performance is Sunday, August 4. Visit the GCP Website or the Event Page on Facebook for show time and ticket information.

GCP Girl: Mark Twain's book has been a favorite for generations. What is one of your favorite summer reads?

GCP Girl: Tell me about some of your previous shows.
Stephen: My last show was "White Christmas", in which I had the honor of playing Bing Crosby's character, Bob Wallace. Before that I was in "Hairspray", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", and "RENT". I'm blessed to have found the GCP and thankful for all that they have taught me.

GCP Girl: Why did you audition for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Stephen: Dan Christophy is an AWESOME director, I loved being in TMM with him and really wanted to be a part of another of his shows.

GCP Girl: What are you looking forward to the most about performing in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"?
Stephen: 15 months ago I met my girlfriend at auditions for "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and we have done four shows together since. I love being on stage with her and watching and learning from her, so that would be my favorite part of this show. Also, the people in the cast and crew; I have formed some great lifelong relationships here at the GCP. I love being in a show with my Family of Friends.

I am now in my 5th GCP show and was blessed with the opportunity to co-star with some of the most talented performers from our community in White Christmas. All because of a hero's push. I am extremely grateful to all of those who gave me a chance and hope that I can inspire others to move out of their comfort zone and experience all that life has to offer. Carlos Asse on Auditioning for "Lend Me a Tenor"

Carlos Asse directs "Lend Me a Tenor" at the Gainesville Community Playhouse. The show will run from September 13 - 29, 2013. Auditions will be held July 14 and 15 and 7:00 at the Vam York Theatre. I sat down with Carlos to get the scoop.

GCP Girl: Why do you want to direct LMAT?
Carlos: It is always a challenge to direct a farce. It is twice the challenge to do it well. I have directed LMAT twice before and whenever one has the opportunity to direct this play, especially in a different venue with a new cast, one should never hesitate to jump at the chance to do so.

GCP Girl:What do you like about it, both as a director and as a theatre patron?
Carlos: LMAT is one of the funniest bedroom farces to come along to the modern stage. Ken Ludwig, the playwright, has given us all the elements of the classic farce: mistaken identities, improbable situations, great misunderstandings and huge meltdowns, taken to the extreme when they combine with quirky characters that introduce love, admiration, romance, anger, jealousy, liquor, pills and sex. Herein, lies the challenge I spoke about in the prior question, because a director, like a juggler, must keep all these elements floating like pins in the air. It is also an audience pleaser, because it keeps them laughing throughout and at its conclusion we see Max’s transformation and how young love has triumphed.
GCP Girl:What is your vision for this show?
Carlos: The environment which surrounds these exuberant characters I envisioned as a realistic one. One in which the scenery, the costumes, the sound and the lights are based in reality; thus, they help to keep all its absurd chaos and comedic action grounded. Since all of this action occurs in the mid-1930s at a high-class hotel in Cleveland, Ohio, there is a certain element in the milieu of period style and architectural elegance.

GCP Girl:What are you looking for in those who audition? If someone wants to impress you what should he/she do?
Carlos: As a director, one is always looking for someone that can handle the material, talent that has good comedic timing and stage presence. These actors must also be directable, easy with which to work and get along with others. Anyone who auditions should come prepared and be acquainted with the play, know what roles they would like to play, but be flexible enough that if offered another role, they shouldn't turn it down. Sometimes what the director sees in the talent matches his vision, not theirs.

GCP Girl:Why should people audition for LMAT?
Carlos: Because they get to work with me. No, I’m kidding! LMAT will give them a great opportunity to hone their comedic timing skills. This type of ensemble play where all parts are so important to the whole, will develop a sharp sense in their acting ability.

Thanks, Carlos!

"Moonlight & Magnolias" character profile: Miss Poppenghul

The Character
Miss Poppenghul
Secretary to David O. Selznick,
Motion Picture Producer
Age: Perpetually 39 (or so she says)
Miss California Orange Festival 19—

(We’re pretty sure the character of Miss Poppenghul is fictional. If she is not, there is no biographical information readily available, so we made some up.)

Miss Poppenghul was the capable and long-suffering secretary to movie producer David O. Selznick, catering to his various whims with good grace and humor. A California native, she witnessed the movie industry grow from its early years into the all-powerful studio systems of Hollywood’s Golden Age. She liked to think she might have been a starlet herself if movies had been around when she was footloose and fancy-free.

After a whirlwind romance that ended tragically in a story much too long to be told here, Miss Poppenghul sold perfume at a posh department store until she went to work at MGM Studios when it opened in 1924. When Louis B. Mayer's son-in-law David O. Selznick started his own studio, she went with him and became his personal secretary. Miss Poppenghul was a tremendous fan of "Gone of With the Wind" and read it several times. She could not wait to see Clark Gable take on the role of Rhett Butler.

In "Moonlight & Magnolias," Miss Poppenghul keeps the screenwriting team supplied with nourishment (well, peanuts and bananas) and keeps the world at bay while they complete their task...with the possible exception of Louis B. Mayer.

The Actress
Jennie Stringfellow
Jennie Stringfellow is a favorite with GCP audiences, playing such roles as Myrtle Brown in "Mornings at Seven," Eunice Hubbell in "A Streetcar Named Desire," Amanda in "Private Lives," and Carrie Watts in "Trip to Bountiful." She also directed many popular productions, including "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Sugar Bean Sisters," "Daddy's Dyin', Who's Got the Will?" and "45 Seconds from Broadway."

"Moonlight & Magnolias" character profile: Ben Hecht

The Character
Ben Hecht
Screenwriter
1894-1964
Oscars for Best Screenplay for "Underworld" (1927) and "The Scoundrel" (1935)

Ben Hecht was born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His family moved to Racine, Wisconsin; when he graduated high school at 16, he moved to Chicago and began a career in journalism. After World War I, the Chicago Daily News sent him to cover Berlin, where he wrote his first and most successful novel, Erik Dorn, in 1921.

Hecht also had a successful career as a playwright, penning productions like "The Egotist" and "The Front Page," which ran for 281 performances on Broadway. He moved on to Hollywood and won an Oscar for his first screenplay, which was for Josef von Sternberg's "Underworld" (1927). Soon after, he became the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood, earning enough to spend most of the year in New York doing what he considered "serious writing." Hecht never thought of the movies as serious art, partly because of the limitations imposed by finances and censorship.

He worked on screenplays for some of Hollywood's most successful films: "Scarface" (1932), "Gunga Din" (1939), "Wuthering Heights" (1939), "Spellbound" (1945), "Notorious" (1946), and "Monkey Business" (1952). Hecht also was uncredited on many other projects, notably "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940), "His Girl Friday" (1940), "The Sun Also Rises" (1957), "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962), and of course, "Gone With the Wind" (1939). Sidney Howard, the original screenwriter for "Gone With the Wind," received final screen credit and the Oscar; it was to have been credited to a team, but Howard died in an accident in 1939 and the studio honored him with the credit.

Hecht was known for being a civil rights activist, fighting against discrimination against African-Americans and Jews. He was a proponent of the United States entering World War II and worked to rescue Jews from Eastern Europe. He also tried to publicize the truth about the Holocaust during a time when news on the issue was scarce.

In "Moonlight & Magnolias," Hecht has just been called in by producer David O. Selznick to rewrite the original screenplay for "Gone With the Wind." Despite not having read the book, he agrees to bang out a new script in five days with the help of Selznick and director Victor Fleming. The atmosphere gets more and more tense as the three battle hunger, fatigue and differing worldviews, but in the end, the finished product is worth the wait.

The Actor
Adam Lishawa
Adam Lishawa last graced the stage of the GCP as Vic Johnson in "Funny Money" and Grown-up Ralphie in "A Christmas Story." He has also been seen at UF and the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre in "Bug," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Hunter Gatherers."

"Moonlight & Magnolias" character profile: Victor Fleming

The Character
Victor Fleming
Motion Picture Director
1889-1949
Oscar for Best Director, "Gone With the Wind" (1939)

Victor Fleming, a California native, met a film director while working as a mechanic, and worked his way from camera assistant to cinematographer. Fleming directed his first film, "When the Clouds Roll By," in 1919. He directed stars like Douglas Fairbanks in silent action films, and eventually received a reputation as a "man's director."

Fleming joined MGM in 1932 and directed some of the studio's most famous films: "Bombshell" (1933), "Treasure Island" (1934), "Captains Courageous" (1937), "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Gone With the Wind" (1939), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941) and "Joan of Arc" (1948).

Despite his reputation for directing men, Fleming had great success directing women: both Vivien Leigh and Hattie McDaniel won Academy Awards for 'Gone With the Wind," and Ingrid Bergman was nominated for "Joan of Arc."

Fleming is the only director to have two films ("Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz") in the top 10 of the AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies list. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be seen on Vine Street.

In "Moonlight & Magnolias," Fleming has just been pulled from the set of "The Wizard of Oz" to replace George Cukor as the director of "Gone With the Wind." Since Fleming is dissatisfied with the script, producer David O. Selznick calls in screenwriter Ben Hecht. There is one problem - Hecht has not read the book. Over the next five days, Selznick and Fleming read and act out the parts while Hecht works furiously to produce a script worthy of the most famous movie in Hollywood history.
